Home Safe Home: Clinically Informed Home Modifications
As Canada’s population ages, supporting older adults to live safely and independently at home has become a growing public health priority. Nearly one in four Canadians aged 65–79—and more than half of those aged 80 and older—report using home adaptations to support daily living, making them the most commonly used community-based support among older adults. At the same time, falls remain the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations for Canadian seniors, with an estimated 20–30% of older adults experiencing a fall each year—most often in their own homes.
Together, these trends underscore the increasing importance of clinically informed home modifications—not only to reduce injury risk, but to support ageing in place, enhance safety and confidence, and help Canadians remain in their homes longer.
In this episode of ComForConnections Canada, we explore how clinically informed home modifications play a critical role in reducing fall risk and supporting safe, independent living for older Canadians and how ComForCare programs and trusted partner initiatives help older adults and their families implement clinically grounded solutions that reduce injury risk, strengthen confidence at home, and improve overall quality of life.
